Group Work

Special education advocacy and coaching

The special education process is a complex group project. I help parents understand the system, use their voice, and confidently advocate for the support their child needs.

The vision

Collaborate to design an education that meets your child’s needs.

Your child is a unique constellation of strengths, vulnerabilities, and passions. No one is better positioned than you to advocate for their needs and your voice is essential in the special education process. And yet, in the face of unfamiliar rules, technical language, and unclear expectations, it is difficult to be effective. I offer the support and guidance you need to help your child thrive.

Education is a team effort and you should feel like someone is on your side. I’m Danielle Mooney and can’t wait to partner with you.

Intake and Record Review

We begin with a discussion of your concerns, goals, and your child’s story. I complete an in-depth examination of your child’s educational records and evaluations to create a case summary with recommendations and a suggested plan of action.

Consultation

I provide practical guidance at every stage. This includes organizing records, creating strong documentation, drafting communication, requesting assessments, and leveraging independent evaluators. I’m available to answer questions and design a long-term strategy.

Program Development

From eligibility to transition planning, I will help you understand the foundational documents (IFSP, 504, IEP, IHCP) of your learner’s educational program so that you can shape its development, follow the implementation, and monitor progress.

Meeting Support

Discussing your child with a group of other people feels vulnerable and often overwhelming. I will be happy to join you at any school-based meeting. We will prepare an agenda that empowers you to advocate, negotiate, and focus on meaningful outcomes.

My approach

Your child’s best advocate is you.

From evaluations to IEPs, I’m here to help you step into that role with clarity, confidence, and support.

Effective collaboration with your school team is the best way to design a program that encompasses all areas of need and delivers an appropriately ambitious education to your student. But, it’s not easy to be impactful when you don’t understand the rules or vocabulary. I share the systems insight and background knowledge you need to truly be an equal participant on your child’s educational team. My focus is on fostering respectful relationships and grounding our advocacy in data. Thorough, organized documentation is essential and establishes a foundation for the long-term project of your child’s education.

When parents and the school disagree about the educational needs of a student, it is critical to continue to foster a productive working relationship. At the same time, parents can pursue avenues for resolution in addition to team meetings. I can help you file state complaints, request meeting facilitation, engage in mediation, and understand when you should seek legal advice from an attorney.

about me

Hello

Hi, I’m Danielle Mooney. I’ve lived in Massachusetts since moving here to attend Wellesley College, where I earned my undergraduate degree. I have two neurodivergent children, and when my oldest began school in 2018, I was quickly introduced to the world of special education. I immersed myself in reading and sought out training and volunteer opportunities to learn to navigate the complex system my daughter relied on. While continuing my career in construction, I often used my growing knowledge to support other families. Education, like construction, requires multiple stakeholders to work together towards their individual and collective goals. The satisfaction I found in using my skills to support children and their families ultimately motivated me to pursue professional training through the Federation for Children with Special Needs.
